How to Put on the Armor of God

Want to feel more prepared for your day? Let's put on that armor girl!

I used to not really take the whole "armor of God" thing seriously... I mean, it’s not like there’s actual armor that I can put on after getting dressed in the morning and all of a sudden I feel completely ready for whatever might come my way. “Coffee spilled all over my white shirt... no problem! A girl is super rude to me at work... atta girl! My husband is short to me while I’m cooking dinner... bless you!” No, this just simply isn’t the case. I tend to feel more unprepared throughout my day and can easily get frustrated or discouraged by all the unpredictable inconveniences along the way.

But when we see the armor of God not as invisible sheets of metal that we pretended to put on as a kid, but rather as decisions we make in our heart at the start of each day as to how we’re going to live and act, then we truly begin to prepare ourselves to live peaceful and powerful lives.

So what is the armor of God and why is it so important to begin with? I think Ephesians 6 in the Passion translation shows us exactly why this armor is so essential to the Christian life.

Put on God’s complete set of armor provided for us, so that you will be protected as you fight against the evil strategies of the accuser! Your hand-to-hand combat is not with human beings, but with the highest principalities and authorities operating in rebellion under the heavenly realms. For they are a powerful class of demon-gods and evil spirits that hold this dark world in bondage. Because of this, you must wear all the armor that God provides so you’re protected as you confront the slanderer, for you are destined for all things and will rise victorious.
— Ephesians 6:11-13 TPT

"Against the evil strategies of the accuser..." The enemy has a strategy! He has a plan and a carefully crafted idea of how to get inside your head and wreak havoc on your life. That is why we must have a strategy for protecting ourselves against the deceptions of the enemy because we are "destined for all things and will rise victorious!"

So let's go over this sacred armor, forged in the fires of heaven and prepared for Daughters without rival, to truly understand what it means to "put on" what our Father gave to us.

Put on truth as a belt to strengthen you to stand in triumph...
— Ephesians 6:14

Make a decision that truth is what will guide you, your decisions and your emotions as you go about your day. No matter what things look like in the natural, truth will stand adamant in your heart and mind. Keep it before you and let it lead you.

Put on holiness as the protective armor that covers your heart...
— Ephesians 6:14

Pursue His holiness by pursuing the person of Jesus. He is your holiness, your perfection and your perfecter, who is making all things new in your life. The enemy wants you to compromise in anything, but Jesus is your strength to not only avoid sin, but a refuge to turn to when we've failed. That's what the enemy hates more than anything - confidence not in ourselves or our own holiness, but in the holiness and righterousness of Jesus.

Stand on your feet alert, then you’ll always be ready to share the blessings of peace...
— Ephesians 6:15

Decide that whatever comes your way today, you are going to be a carrier of God's perfect peace. You can't make this decision once the troubles of the day start to paint your mind with dimly lit thoughts and cloudy emotions. But this must be a decision of your heart at the start of the day. No matter what happens in your life, you can bring peace and life forth. Choose to be a carrier of His light and purpose on this earth.

In every battle, take faith as your wrap-around shield, for it is able to extinguish the blazing arrows coming at you from the Evil One...
— Ephesians 6:16

What are the blazing arrows? The deception of the enemy. This is truly the only power he has over our lives if we yeild our minds over to him. But when we choose to act in faith, regardless of how we feel or what negative thoughts pop up in our minds, then we wrap the shield of faith around our minds, protecting them from falling into the deception of the enemy.

Embrace the power of salvation’s full deliverance, like a helmet to protect your thoughts from lies. And take the mighty razor-sharp Spirit-sword of the spoken Word of God...
— Ephesians 6:17

I wrote a whole post on this topic here and I could go on for days about the importance of your thoughts and words. Keep your mind fixed on Jesus and what He did for you, your identity as a Royal Daughter of the Most Hight God, and always speak the Word into your life and the lives of others. Most of the time when we're struggling, we're not actively doing these things and because of that, we leave our minds and hearts unprotected.

Too often we wait till trouble is on the horizon (or we’re right smack dab in the hot mess) to turn to God’s word, looking for some quick fix to the boiling anger we feel rising up in our soul. We’re short, rude and snappy with people. We take offense and harbor the faults of others in our hearts. We get discouraged and quickly take our eyes off of Jesus and look to the waves around us, searching for an answer.

But our answer is always the same... Jesus is our answer, our protection and our power to reign in life. Take some time at the beginning of your day to go through the armor of God and make a bold declaration that the enemy cannot have your peace, joy or purpose set for that day. But you will walk in faith, carry peace, extend mercy, and wield the sword of the spirit, which is the Word of God.

A new day is dawning and God is calling His Daughters to rise up in the power, purpose and splendor that He has called us to. Now is not the time to be passive. Now is not the time to place blame or point fingers at anyone else for the state of our lives and the reach of our influence. We are more than what the world expects of us and yet we settle for so much less than we are. It's time we rise, shine and lift others up along the way. It's time we love fearlessly, live purposefully and fight our battles well.

Get your armor on girl! It’s a new day.

How to Start Winning the Battle in Your Mind

Do you ever feel trapped in your own mind? Do you ever feel lost in a sea of wandering thoughts that you can't seem to control or emotions that overtake you in a moment's notice? Do you ever try to bring about freedom in your own life only to be brought back to reality as your mind circles back to old patterns and behaviors, reminding you that you're still the same and you probably always will be?

Do you ever feel trapped in your own mind? Do you ever feel lost in a sea of wandering thoughts that you can't seem to control or emotions that overtake you in a moment's notice? Do you ever try to bring about freedom in your own life only to be brought back to reality as your mind circles back to old patterns and behaviors, reminding you that you're still the same and you probably always will be?

Girl I have been there! For years I struggled with fear and insecurity - even after traveling the world, working with incredible ministries and marrying the single greatest guy on the planet, I still struggled with feeling less than, not important enough and yet too much all at the same time. Well it took my lightening-fast mind quite some time to finally come to the conclusion that the issue probably wasn't something that was happening to me, but rather something happening on the inside of me.

Fear, insecurity, shame, guilt, unworthiness, comparison... it all begins in the mind. Sure our circumstances can assist in bringing these thoughts to the forefront of our minds, but the battles themselves are fought, won and lost right in our own heads. This is one reason why I believe the bible is so adamant about us renewing our minds.

Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.
— Romans 12:2 MSG

This world has it's own way of thinking and by default, that is exactly how you will think, respond and be conformed to, unless you decide to take action with your mind. The Christian life is not a passive life, but it's an active life where we are constantly moving forward, allowing what is in our new spirits to bleed out into our soul (mind, will and emotions) and into our daily lives. But too many of us don't take our thoughts that seriously. I mean, they're just thoughts right? How serious could this battle be?

Well let's just say it's serious enough for God to declare that our transformation in the Christian life is dependent on the degree that we renew our behavior? No... Choices? No... Church attendance? No... To the degree that we renew our minds. Notice in the above verse that Paul says to, "fix your attention on God." Then he says, "You'll be changed from the inside out." Fixing our attention on God is a decision we have to constantly make and it's not something that will happen without your consent and cooperation. Therefore, there must be a role we have to play in this great but silent battle for your soul.

So what does our role look like? I heard it said once that thoughts are like birds, you can't stop them from flying over your head but you can stop them from building a nest in your hair. Basically, thoughts may come your way and you're not always responsible for every one that pops up in your mind. But what you do with that thought once it's there is your responsibility and will determine the amount of growth in your life. But to combat our thoughts, we must have some weapons at our disposal.

First, we must know the word of God. The word is a double-edged sword (Heb. 4:12) and our greatest weapon against the enemy and his deception. It says in John 8:32 that you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. So the condition on getting set free is to know the truth. The word translated "know" in this verse is the same greek word translated "knew" in Genesis 4:1 where it says that Adam "knew" his wife Eve and she bore Cain. Clearly this is more than just a once a week, church attending, bible reading kind of relationship. This is as close a relationship as we can have and we were created to have it with God.

And this is the real and eternal life: that they know you, the one and only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent.
— John 17:3 MSG

Truth has a name. His name is Jesus. And if you want to experience true freedom, power and purpose on this earth, then your relationship with Him must be the absolute greatest priority of your life. Only then will you be able to extinguish the flaming darts of the evil one (Eph. 6:16) and start to take ground in the battle in your mind.

Next, once we know truth, we will more easily recognize when a thought doesn't line up with that truth. And that's when we take that thought captive, rebuke it (out loud if you have to) and replace it with the truth. See why the enemy fights you so hard on your bible reading time?

I know this seems like a lot of extra effort just for our thoughts. I mean, aren't we supposed to be casting our devils, waving swords around and beating demons to the ground? We give WAY too much credit to the enemy! The only true power he has is deception, which means he can't get his grimy paws on you without you yielding your mind over to him. Because you see your thoughts lead to your emotions, which lead to your life choices, which ultimately lead you to your destiny. That's why he tries to get in your head first, then he'll have access to your journey.

Don't give him a foothold in your life. The truth is you don't have to! You don't have to stay saved and stuck in the same old lame thoughts and tired emotions. Know the truth, take authority, and begin to act in faith, even before you feel it in the natural. That is the way the Kingdom of God works anyways. He spoke and then it became reality. Walk after the nature of your Maker and be a Daughter of Faith and Wonder, who calls the Spiritual realm into her earthly reality.

Take up your sword and fight these battles well. You have what it takes and your journey awaits!

Identity Crisis - Getting Back to God's Design

For the longest time, I didn't understand why things weren't changing in my life. I had been a Christian since I was 7, went to bible college, married the best guy on the planet and yet I was still struggling with feelings of doubt and insecurity and I just couldn't get a grasp on why. Ever been there?  We do the right things, we say the right things, we've memorized the scripture... but what is going on when you feel like you're fighting with everything

For the longest time, I didn't understand why things weren't changing in my life. I had been a Christian since I was 7, went to bible college, married the best guy on the planet and yet I was still struggling with feelings of doubt and insecurity and I just couldn't get a grasp on why. Ever been there?

We do the right things, we say the right things, we've memorized the scripture... but what is going on when you feel like you're fighting with everything you have and you're not really getting anywhere? Perhaps we don't truly know the key to fighting our battles well. Wouldn't you like to know what it is?

So many times we try and combat our fears, insecurities and mistakes without truly understanding and embracing our identity as Royal Daughters of God. We think that we have to fight based on our own strength, wisdom and ability. This is why we are constantly falling short and growing weary in the process. We fight, climb and persevere only to be left standing in the same place as before. What's a girl got to do to get some progress made here?

We simply cannot approach our battles in our own strength. We must stand and fight from our position in Christ. We must combat the enemy with our identity, not our ability.

Recently I saw the movie Wonder Woman and I was completely blown away by what God decided to show me in her story. I mean, who knew that God would speak to you during a superhero movie? Here are three things that you need to know about who you are that I learned through the story of Wonder Woman...

1. You reflect the glory of your Father
Wonder Woman wasn't born special for no apparent reason. She had special abilities because, unknown to her, she was the daughter of Zeus. So her strength came because of who her father was. She could do things others couldn't, had abilities others didn't, and was driven with a purpose that others would never fully understand.

I have good news for you. You are not the daughter of some mystic greek god, but you are the beloved daughter of the Most High God, the King of Kings and Name above every name. And as His daughter, you were meant to reflect His glory and goodness on this earth and into every life that you encounter. Have you ever wondered about how people feel after being around you for a little while? Do they feel important? like they matter? Or do they feel judged, small or not worth your time? You are an ambassador on this earth to spread true love, joy and peace to hurting and broken hearts. Let's be daughters who represent our Father well and reflect His heart for His people.

2. You are a target
As Wonder Woman was leaving the home she had always known to go fight the battle she was born to fight, her mother watches as she sails aways and her mother's sister asks her, "Are you going to tell her?" And her mother replies, "The more she knows, the sooner he will find her." Her mother knew that the closer her daughter came to the truth of whose she was, and the power she possessed because of that, the sooner her enemy would come looking for her.

The word Christian literally means "anointed one," and when you are marked by God, you are noted by the enemy. Because when your enemy looks at you, he doesn't see what you see. He doesn't see the tired eyes, weary heart and a past riddled with mistakes. Sure he tries to remind you of those but that's only because he sees something in you that threatens him. You don't attack what you aren't threatened by and when he sees you... he sees Jesus. He sees the very same spirit that went down into hell, took the keys of hell and death and eternally sealed his fate. But if he can keep you from seeing what he sees, he can keep you scared and stuck.

3. You are the weapon
As Wonder Woman arrives for her final battle with Ares the god of war, she believes all she has to do is stab him with a special sword and he will be defeated. She sticks him easily enough but it doesn't seem to faze him. She then has a revelation of who she is and whose she is that brings her to the conclusion that she is in fact the weapon who can defeat him. Knowing her true identity was the key to her overcoming her enemy for good.

This is why our enemy fights us so much when it comes to knowing who we truly are. He wants you to find your identity in your mistakes, your past, your relationships, your career, your "good works," your children, your personality, basically anything other than in Christ, because that is where all of your power comes from.

So you see, before we can stand our ground and fight our battles well, we need to make sure that we have a firm grasp on who we are and who our Father is. It is in this identity that all of our power, confidence, strength and courage lies. We can't fight our enemy without knowing who we are. And often times, the enemy knows who we are long before we wake up and realize who we are. Well it's time for us to rise up as daughters and defend our families, our marriages, our homes, our dreams and our futures with the abilities deposited in us through Christ.

Don't forget to remember who you are. It just might be the difference between living saved and stuck or on purpose with passion. Let's cling fast to our Father and write these chapters we're living in with purpose and power.

Fight well,
Jess
